Dr. Johnson, III: We think of Social media as a way to communicate, not only with each other but to communicate in the classroom, and to really work at being at the cutting edge of that. Not catching up or not studying it from the historical perspective.

Dr. Horiuchi: Social Media is an increasingly important part of how we keep track of what people are thinking about. But also because of the ubiquity of cell phones and messaging it allows everybody to have a voice. We use it also in many applications, schools where they send messages to parents and students in high schools even. To remind them of things that are important to do. So it’s become a real strong communication mechanism. It also gives opportunity for people to have a bigger voice than they might otherwise have. If they seem to fall into one of those categories of influencers. To having a wide number of followers to their sites. However it does not displace the traditional and important means of public participation. Which is showing up to city and county meetings, special election voting. Those are super important for all women and men to participate in those things. Not to simply to tweet about it.

Dr. Johnson, III: The Egypt example is a great one. You know, just through, I’m not sure if it was Facebook or another entity, they were able to galvanize, you know thousands of people in a shorter period of time to protest. I think that’s amazing, that wouldn’t have happened ten or fifteen years ago. States like Wyoming example they haven’t necessarily really had a voice, until Facebook and Twitter and these types of social media and I think that’s a great thing. It’s providing people with that voice that was missing.

Dr. Horiuchi: You could say technology is neutral. It can be used for good, but it can also be used for things that are not so good. So, I think that one of the most important things for people who don’t use social media is to understand how people that are very close to them might be using it or might be helped or harmed by more use of it.

Dr. Johnson, III: So at the core of public administration are two fundamental principles; accountability and accountability through transparency. Social media and the ability to access information in real time, really increases the transparency of public administration of public processes, increases accountability and when you have transparency and accountability you get that effectiveness. To me it’s the future of public administration.
